Van Garrison, the Non-fiction Judge 

Van Garrison, an award-winning teacher of high school English and department chair for over 20 years, was director and co-founder of the Southern High School Young Writers Conference, which received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Education in 1991. She is co-author of Learning With and From the Bridge Kids, (Ohio Journal of the English Language Arts).  In addition to teaching writing and literature in high schools, Van has served as an instructor at Duke University, the Duke Young Writers Camp and workshops, Durham and Wake County school systems, and North Carolina State University s Humanities Summer Institute in World Literature. She retired from teaching in 2006 and currently works as a consultant for the North Carolina New Schools Project.
